Saints Make Formal Roster Move With Michael Thomas

July 28, 2021 by The Spun

Michael Thomas celebrating for the Saints.

Michael Thomas was significantly limited for the New Orleans Saints last year, due to an early-season ankle injury. He wound up appearing in seven games, recording 40 receptions for 438 yards and no scores.

The Saints have plenty of questions on offense heading into 2021. With Drew Brees retired, Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston are competing to replace him as QB1. Now, it is unclear when Thomas, one of the NFL’s most productive wide receivers, will be available to start his season. He recently had surgery to repair the injured ankle, and has an estimated recovery time of four months.

With a roster move by the Saints today, he’ll officially miss at least the first six weeks of the season. Today, the Saints officially added him to the “physically unable to perform” (reserve/PUP) list, making that absence official.

That designation will cost him games vs. the Green Bay Packers, at the Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots, vs. the New York Giants, at the Washington Football Team, and at the Seattle Seahawks to start the season.

As of now, Michael Thomas’ first possible return game could come on Oct. 31, when the Saints host their NFC South rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the defending Super Bowl champions.

The team took one step towards filling those big shoes on Monday. Chris Hogan, a former New England Patriots receiver who spent part of his offseason playing professional lacrosse in the upstart Premiere Lacrosse League. The Saints are bringing him back to pro football, where he has 216 career receptions for 2,795 yards and 18 touchdowns, and 34/542/4 in nine career playoff games. Hogan has two Super Bowl rings, both with the Pats.
