The Chicago Bears have fervently maintained that veteran Andy Dalton will line-up under center as the starting quarterback in Week 1, even with highly touted rookie Justin Fields now on the roster. The organization has come under some fire for the decision, but seems to be sticking to the plan that it drew out back in the spring.
Despite Chicago’s persistence, Sean McVay isn’t fulling buying what the Bears are selling.
The head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, who will square off with the Bears this upcoming Sunday, revealed that he plans to prepare to see Fields “in some form or fashion” this weekend, according to Andrew Siciliano. He called it “naive” for his team to not gameplan somewhat for the rookie quarterback, in case Chicago decides to swap him in for Dalton at some point, or use him in another unique way.
McVay might just be covering his bases, but it almost sounds like he knows the Bears are plotting something. The Rams may try and prepare, but Matt Nagy and the Chicago coaching staff have the element of surprise.

Fields impressed the Bears coaching staff over the summer with his work ethic and performances in the team’s preseason games. However, Nagy and the front office have stressed the importance of not rushing him into NFL action before he’s ready. Putting Fields under center against the Rams tenacious defense doesn’t sound like a recipe for success and could jeopardize his first professional season before it really gets underway.
Even if McVay don’t see Fields much or at all this weekend, the team will need to be prepared for anything the Bears throw his way. The defenses should steal the show in the match-up, so each head coach will need to get creative on offense to put points on the board.
Rams-Bears will kick-off Sunday night at 8:20 p.m. ET and air on NBC.
