A stunning report from the Houston Chronicle on Wednesday signaled that a major college football realignment could be just around the corner. Per Brent Zwerneman, two historic programs, Oklahoma and Texas, reached out to the SEC, hoping to join the conference.
The Sooners and the Longhorns reportedly wanted out of the Big 12 which could possibly lead to the creation of college football’s first “super league.” Oklahoma and Texas would be the second and third schools to move out out of the Big 12 and into the SEC in recent memory, joining Texas A&M.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey wasn’t eager to confirm any of the rumors on Wednesday. However, he didn’t exactly shut them down completely.
According to Dennis Dodd of CBS, the SEC commissioner had “no comment on that speculation” of a Texas or Oklahoma move to the SEC. To Brett McMurphy of Stadium, Sankey tried to send the same message, in slightly different words.
“We are only worried about the 2021 season. Somebody dropped a report from unnamed people,” the SEC commissioner told McMurphy.

Sankey’s answers do their best to shut down the topic but seem to imply that there’s something behind the latest rumors. If that’s truly the case, Oklahoma and Texas really might be on the move in the near future.
However, it’s important to approach this latest speculation with an appropriate amount of skepticism. Oklahoma and Texas have long been rumored to make moves out of the Big 12 in the past but have stayed put in the conference since its inception.
That being said, a move to the SEC could have program-altering implications for both schools. With two historic teams joining one of the strongest conferences in college football, fans would want to tune-in as often as possible.
For now, any move by Oklahoma or Texas remains a rumor. Time will tell if another report gives life to a possible realignment.
