After watching her dominate the 2016 Olympics, the United States thought Simone Biles would have a similar performance this year in Tokyo. Unfortunately, she had to withdraw from multiple events because she experienced the “twisties” while competing.
It was difficult seeing Biles on the sidelines for most of the events this year, but she did handle this entire situation with grace.
Biles’ boyfriend, Houston Texans safety Jonathan Owens, revealed how he dealt with this entire Olympic saga. Owens admit that he was heartbroken seeing Biles unable to perform the way she wanted to.
“I was sick for her, just because I can see her face, I kind of know her facial expressions, I can kind of read her lips and kind of know what was going on and kind of what she was telling her coach,” Owens said, via ESPN. “I kind of already knew what was going on beforehand, so I was just really hoping she was going to get over it and be able to go out there and perform. So I was sick to my stomach because she wasn’t able to go out there.”

Owens tried to stay positive for Biles and encourage her throughout the Olympics, albeit this was unfamiliar territory for him.
Eventually, Biles made her triumphant return in the balance beam final and claimed a bronze medal to finish off her run in Tokyo. It was a moment that Owens will never forget.
“I was so proud of her,” Owens said. “Just to be able to overcome mentally what was going on. She kind of altered her beam routine, but I was just happy for her.”
Simone Biles deserves a ton of credit and support for putting an emphasis on athletes’ mental health during the Olympics. And the fact that she managed to overcome those hurdles and make the podium is a testament to her greatness.
