Last week, former New England Patriots linebacker Rob Ninkovich made some jaw-dropping remarks about Cam Newton’s stint with the franchise on “The Dan and Ninko Show” podcast.
Ninkovich claims Patriots rookie quarterback Mac Jones helped Newton learn the team’s playbook this offseason.
“I got some inside sources now, and I won’t say names, but from what I gained from sources inside the actual building… Mac was basically helping Cam learn the playbook,” Ninkovich said. “Mac was having less mental errors and a better understanding of the offense.”
During a previous episode of Undisputed on FS1, Skip Bayless responded to Ninkovich’s report. It’s safe to say he’s not on board with the former Patriots linebacker’s comments about Newton.
“These remarks from Ninkovich — I have respect for him because he was there, he did this at the highest level… But these remarks left a bad taste in my mouth because, all of a sudden, it is open season on Cam Newton,” Bayless said. “And it’s because Bill Belichick cut him, so all bets are off, let it fly, come one, come all, line up to pile on with every little bit.”
Bayless doesn’t really buy this report because Newton spent a year in New England before Jones arrived. It just doesn’t make sense that a rookie understands the playbook better than a seasoned veteran.
“I have no way of knowing whether this is true or not, but it seems a little overstated, a little exaggerated that Mac Jones was teaching Cam the playbook after Cam was there all of last year,” Bayless continued. “I’m sorry, I don’t think Cam’s an idiot.”
It’s possible that Jones helped out Newton with a few plays this offseason, but Ninkovich’s report does seem a tad exaggerated. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not true.
Newton has not yet received any interest from other NFL teams. He’ll most likely remain a free agent when Week 1 of the season is all said and done.
