These last few days leading up to the season opener are when NFL teams tie up any loose ends, such as naming captains. The Pittsburgh Steelers revealed theirs today.
After naming five team captains in 2020, Pittsburgh is streamlining things this year. They’ll have three captains heading into the season.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, in his 18th season, has been named a captain for the 13th time overall and 11th time in a row. Defensive lineman Cam Heyward is the defensive captain for the seventh straight season.
Meanwhile, fullback Derek Watt will serve as special teams captain, the first time he’s held that honor. Watt’s br0ther T.J. was a defensive co-captain in 2020.

Pittsburgh will open the 2021 season against Buffalo at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. The Steelers will be looking to return to the playoffs for the 10th time under head coach Mike Tomlin.
Last year, the Steelers started 11-0 before stumbling to a 1-4 finish. They then went on to lose to the Cleveland Browns in the first round of the AFC playoffs.
