With the depth chart at wide receiver getting pretty crowded for the Pittsburgh Steelers, it appears James Washington wants a fresh start elsewhere in the NFL.
ESPN insider Adam Schefter is reporting that Washington approached the Steelers and requested a trade based on his limited playing time from last season.
Washington, a former second-round pick, had 30 receptions for 392 yards and five touchdowns in 2020. He was behind Chase Claypool, Diontae Johnson and JuJu Smith-Schuster on the depth chart.
Before the Steelers selected Claypool in the 2020 NFL Draft, Washington had a much bigger role in their offense. During the 2019 season, he had 44 catches for 735 yards and three touchdowns.
Steelers’ WR James Washington, a former 2018 second-round pick, has approached the Steelers and requested a trade based on his limited playtime last season and so far this preseason, per source.

The timing of this report from Schefter is interesting to say the least.
During last night’s game between the Cowboys and Steelers, veteran wideout Dez Bryant tweeted “If you are a team and want a top tier WR trade for James Washington….. thank me later.”
Why is that tweet from Bryant worth mentioning? Well, Bryant and Washington are two of the most productive receivers to ever play for Oklahoma State. Perhaps Bryant knows a thing or two about Washington’s situation in Pittsburgh.
It’s unclear at this time if the Steelers are willing to grant Washington’s wish. There should be a solid market for Washington since he’s on the final year of his rookie deal and has just a $1.4 million cap hit.
