No. 2 player in Louisiana
Arizona State got one step closer to landing their first five-star recruit of the class on Tuesday after 2022 safety Jacoby Mathews kept the Sun Devils in consideration along with five other schools.
Mathews, a top-32 nationally-ranked prospect by 247Sports.com out of Ponchatoula, LA, also included Clemson, Florida, LSU, USC, and Texas as the remaining destinations he sees himself playing ball at next year. The recruiting site projects him as the No. 2 safety prospect in the state of Louisiana and the No. 2 prospect at his position nationally.
Rivals has Mathews in the No. 11 overall spot in its 2022 class rankings, and he lands on top of both the site’s overall safety position rankings and Louisiana rankings.

Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 204 pounds, Mathews also played quarterback for his high school, racking up nearly 1,600 total yards of offense and over 20 touchdowns in nine games his senior year.
Accompanying Mathews’ social media announcement was a YouTube video, which detailed his recruiting process and included interviews with coaches and teammates. The channel plans to show behind-the-scenes footage of Mathews’ last year playing high school football.
Mathews plans to leave a legacy at whichever school he chooses to sign at.
“When people to remember the name Jacoby Mathews, I want people to remember the kid that couldn’t be moved by anything,” Mathews said. “Because one thing about me is, aside of the media and everything, I’ve been through a lot of obstacles in life and been past them. And now I’m here and look where I’m standing.”
The Sun Devils extended Mathews an offer on March 13. The team has already landed two 2022 four-star safety commits out of Florida, with Hallandale High teammates Jaylin Marshall and Alfonzo Allen declaring just weeks apart from each other.
St. Bernard athlete Larry Turner-Gooden, the No. 7 ranked prospect in California, and kicker Carter Brown out of Dawson High in Pearland, TX, round out ASU’s 2022 commit list.
