Good and bad news
Each goal was earned on Sunday between the Sun Devils and the Golden Bears. No. 6 Cal (7-4, 2-4 Pac-12) completed the weekend sweep over No. 4 Arizona State (11-6, 5-3) following a 5-3 win.
Cal didn’t exactly race out to a 4-0 lead as it didn’t score the fourth goal until the final minute of the third period. Goaltender Cassidy Ball and the Golden Bear defense held Arizona State scoreless until the final period.
Amira Van Buren and Luca Petovary scored goals within a minute of each other to close the Arizona State deficit to two. However, Cal’s defense stood tall once again and a score from Elli Protopapas closed it out.
The Sun Devils return home to face UCLA for a two-game set starting on April 10.
Arizona State lacrosse (7-3, 4-2 Pac-12) lost to Colorado (5-5, 3-3) 15-11 on Sunday. The Buffaloes snapped Arizona State’s five-game winning streak.
After a first half filled with runs from each team, the second half featured a strong Colorado defense. The Sun Devils only scored five goals in the second half and one was when the contest was already decided. Colorado outshot Arizona State by 15 in the second half.
A score from Tess Keiser with 6:30 left put the Sun Devils down by one. Although, Colorado responded scoring four of the game’s final five goals and its way to victory.
The Sun Devils return home to face Stanford and Cal on April 16 and 18.
Despite the team season being concluded on Saturday, Cairo Leonard-Baker and Hannah Scharf are headed to the NCAA Championships are on April 16-17 in Fort Worth, Texas.
Leonard-Baker will compete for the uneven bars title after a 9.950 on Friday at the Salt Lake Regional. Scharf, a WCGA Regular Season Second Team All-American, qualified to compete in the all-around at NCAA Championships to conclude her breakout campaign.
