Successful day

Men’s Tennis

The streak continues. No. 21 Arizona State men’s tennis (9-1, 2-0 Pac-12) extended its winning streak to eight after defeating Washington (4-5, 0-2) 5-2. The doubles point went Arizona State’s way. Two 6-2 wins from Nathan Ponwith/George Stoupe and Tim Ruehl/Makey Rakotomalala started the day off well.

On courts three-six, Arizona State dominated the Huskies to clinch the win. Stoupe and Rakotomalala swept their matches, while it took Andrea Bolla and Christian Lerby three sets but got the job done.

Arizona State heads south next week for a trio of matches against Tulsa, Oklahoma and Baylor.

Women’s Tennis

Rice (6-2) got the better of 25th-ranked Arizona State women’s tennis (6-3) 5-2 on Sunday. The Owls started off the day hot taking the doubles point after their pairings of Maria Budin/ Diae El Jardi and Michaela Haet/Federica Trevisan each topped ASU’s Lauryn John-Baptiste/Ilze Hattingh and Domenika Turkovic/Giulia Morlet 6-3 on courts one and two.

Marianna Argyrokastriti won her match in three sets and Hattingh took her match on the top court. Three Sun Devils were best in three sets to showcase how close the match was.

Arizona State starts conference play on Mar. 5 when it hosts Oregon.

Water Polo

Fourth-ranked Arizona State water polo (6-3) earned a 7-4 win against No. 6 Michigan (5-3) on Sunday. The Sun Devils came out the gates with a head of steam. Michigan opened the contest on a score, but ASU’s three goal scorers; Blaire McDowell, Luca Petovary and Bente Rogge all found the back of the net in the first period.

The Wolverines battled back to close the gap to one at half. Then the Sun Devil defense locked down and only allowed one Michigan goal in the second half that came in the final 10 seconds after the game had been decided. Petovary and McDowell each added another score in the second half and Rogge’s three goals led the team.

Water Polo returns on Mar. 6 and 7 to host second-ranked Stanford.

Gymnastics

Arizona State gymnastics (4-4) earned its fourth straight meet of 49-plus scores in each event to tie a program record. The 197.050 overall score was enough to beat Washington’s 193.575.

A Sun Devil took each event title. Hannah Scharf’s 9.900 on beam was the top result and she took home the all-around title after another 39.500 performance. Sarah Clark took home bars (9.925), Anaya Smith won vault (9.900) and Cairo Leonard-Baker (9.925) was the floor champ.

The Gym Devils will host Arizona again on Mar. 6.
