The college football world was shaken up this afternoon by multiple reports indicating that Texas and Oklahoma had reached out to the SEC about joining.
Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle first reported the news. Since then, other outlets have chimed in, including AL.com.
According to AL.com’s John Talty, the belief among college football circles is that Texas and OU have already taken measures to enable leaving the Big 12. If they do defect, the SEC is the “desired” landing spot.
“In reporting before the news broke, AL.com heard from multiple college football insiders that Texas and Oklahoma had already taken steps to facilitate a possible move and the desired landing place should both leave the Big 12 is the SEC,” Talty wrote before throwing in a qualifier . “That move was in no way considered a done deal as of Wednesday, though, and that it wasn’t considered a formality to become reality.”

As Talty writes, there are some potential roadblocks to such a move, including Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork, who said this afternoon he wants the Aggies “to be the only SEC team from the state of Texas.”
But there are an awful lot of non-denials out there from connected folks, too many to say there’s no smoke here.
“We are only worried about the 2021 season. Somebody dropped a report from unnamed people,” SEC commissioner Greg Sankey told reporters.
“Speculation swirls around collegiate athletics. We will not address rumors or speculation,” Texas said in a media statement.
