The Saints Have Placed 3 Players On Injured Reserve

September 7, 2021 by The Spun

New Orleans Saints v Philadelphia Eagles

The New Orleans Saints have been pretty busy today as they finalize their roster for Week 1. While they’ve signed a handful of players, they’ve now placed three more on injured reserve.

On Monday, the Saints announced that they have placed starting kicker Wil Lutz, tight end Nick Vannett and offensive lineman Will Clapp on injured reserve. All three will now miss a minimum of three games.

Lutz has been the Saints’ kicker for five years. He led the NFL in extra points in 2017 and made the Pro Bowl in 2019. Lutz has a career field goal conversion rate of 86.6%.

Vannett was a starting tight end for the Denver Broncos in 2020, recording 14 receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown. He has 75 career receptions for 686 yards and five touchdowns over stints with Denver, the Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Clapp is a backup offensive lineman with 25 appearances over the past three seasons.

Losing Wil Lutz is definitely the biggest of the three losses. He’s been a model of consistency for most of his career.

Aldrick Rosas is expected to replace Lutz if the Saints sign him off their practice squad. Rosas made the Pro Bowl in 2018 after converting 32 of 33 field goals. But outside of that incredible seasons, Rosas has about a 72% conversion rate.

Other notable signings the Saints are making include wide receiver Chris Hogan and quarterback Trevor Siemian.

The Saints will open their season against the Green Bay Packers at TIAA Bank Field this Sunday.
