NFL teams are scrambling to sure up their rosters in the days leading up to Week 1 of the 2021 season. The Houston Texans decided to join the fray by becoming the latest club to add a defensive back ahead of their opener.
The Texans reportedly claimed cornerback Jimmy Moreland off of waivers Tuesday, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Moreland was waived earlier this week by the Washington Football Team after agreeing to an injury settlement.
Although Moreland reached an injury settlement with Washington, he’s expected to be back in time for Week 1. He reportedly suffered a minor knee bruise, per Ben Standig of The Athletic.
With that being the case, the Texans might call upon Moreland to take the field as soon as this weekend against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Washington selected Moreland in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL draft and he quickly rose above his station. He’s played in 30 games and made 10 starts over the last two seasons, tallying 85 tackles, five passes defensed, one interception and one forced fumble.
Moreland is set to begin his third-year in the NFL and his first outside of Washington. He played mostly in the slot over the last two years, so could carve out a similar role for himself with the Texans.
Houston has been targeting depth at cornerback for the last few weeks and will need it with Bradley Roby set to miss the season opener due to a suspension dating back to last year. The team also ranked in the bottom ten in passing defense in 2020 and will desperately want to improve upon that mark this fall.
Moreland will get his first opportunity with the Texans this Sunday in Indianapolis against the Colts.
