ESPN NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay apparently decided that Ryan Day didn’t need to get all of the smoke after the Buckeyes‘ loss to Michigan today. He wants some of it for himself.
Taking to Twitter, McShay declared that even after Ohio State’s loss to Michigan, he would still put them in over undefeated Cincinnati for the No. 4 spot in the College Football Playoff. He asserted that Ohio State are “simply better” and wants “#best4teams.”
“A lot can happen in the next week. But if it comes down to to OSU and Cincinnati for the No. 4 spot in the CFP, Ohio State is simply better. Two losses might keep them out but I want the #best4teams,” McShay wrote.
College football fans immediately dogpiled McShay’s tweet for how silly it was. Many are wondering what the point of playing football at all is if unbeaten Cincinnati can do everything right and still not make the playoff over a two-loss team.
Didn’t win the conference ❌
Didn’t win the division ❌
Not just one, but two losses ❌That’s three strikes and they’re out for Ohio State. They don’t belong in the playoff, ESPECIALLY not over an undefeated Cincinnati https://t.co/lNgkr3SR50

Nothing wrong with this. It’s why the Cowboys play in the Super Bowl every year. We just want to see the best teams, regardless of record. #AmericasTeam https://t.co/NT48iLUckp

Then what is the point of playing games https://t.co/xy6XNPgZs2

Everything that’s wrong with the college football playoff* in one tweet. https://t.co/yYiClWHN0d

Others pointed out the simple question: How can McShay know that the Buckeyes are better if they haven’t played?
Why are they automatically better? They haven’t played each other. https://t.co/f2VedX4ovL

It should be no surprise at all from this level of response that Todd McShay has been thoroughly ratio’d on Twitter. The responses above were some of the most polite ones.
The fact of the matter is, Ohio State will not be in the College Football Playoff unless they get a lot of help. Maybe Cincinnati will lose the AAC Championship Game and get placed above them in the standings.
But viewpoints like the one McShay is espousing is part of why there’s so much disparity in college football.
Don’t be shocked if he deletes this tweet or walks it back at some point.
