Tonight’s 2022 World Cup qualifying game against Honduras is a gut-check game for the US men’s national team. And just about every fan of the USMNT knows it.
The USMNT were held to a 0-0 draw in El Salvador to open their qualifying account, which was forgivable at the time. But their ensuing 1-1 draw against Canada in Nashville – on the heels of a litany of off-the-field drama – was not.
The USMNT now have three points and sit at fourth on the CONCACAF table with 12 games to go. They must reach third place or better to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Right now they trail arch-rival Mexico, along with Costa Rica and Canada.
USMNT fans are pretty concerned heading into this game. They’re missing several starters due to injuries and COVID-19, making them understandably nervous on social media:
These are the games that you dream about playing in. Pressure from the outside noisemakers, needing to get a result and playing for your country. If you are scared then it may not be for you. Good luck to the @USMNT tonight in 🇭🇳. 👊🏼💪🏼🇺🇸 #USMNT

After only scoring 1 goal in 2 matches I expect them to come out FURIOUS tonight. No reason not to get 3 points.

Time to put the big boy pants on. Honduras is a team of MLS and Honduran players and yeah it’s hot and loud…time to show your quality, show resolve, and get a result. Saddle up. #usmnt

I am very scared. Probably why I just watch from the comfort of my own couch. Also no left foot.

No doubt the US men’s national team were expecting to claim 7-9 points in this three game stretch. But at most they can claim five if they win tonight.
In October, the USMNT have an even more daunting slate with games against Jamaica and Costa Rica at home and an away game versus Panama. And after that, a pair of huge games in November: A home game against Mexico and a road game against the Reggae Boyz.
Winning tonight is absolutely essential for the USMNT.
The game will be played at 10:05 p.m. EST and will air on Paramount+ and Telemundo.
