The Houston Texans are among the teams jockeying for head coaching interviews as the organization looks towards 2021. Unfortunately, it looks like they won’t get a chance to meet with one of the league’s top candidates.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus declined an interview with the Texans. The 50-year is widely considered to be one of the most sought after candidates on the market this offseason. Indianapolis boasts one of the best defenses in the league, ranking in the top-10 in yards allowed and points against per game.
Meanwhile, Houston looks to be in dire need of a strong defensive coach. The Texans fired head coach and general manager Bill O’Brien just four games into the 2020 season. Houston went on to give up the third most yards in the NFL during the regular season in addition to 29 points per game.
Although Eberflus sent a clear message to Houston, he did accept interview requests with the Jets and the Chargers for their head coach vacancies. After the Colts play the Bills in the Wild Card round of the playoffs, Eberflus will interview with New York on Sunday and Los Angeles on Monday.
#Colts DC Matt Eberflus — one of the most in-demand head-coaching candidates — plans to interview with the #Jets on Sunday and the #Chargers on Monday, per source. He declined an interview with the #Texans. For now, full focus on Saturday’s playoff game at Buffalo.

The news certainly looks good for Eberflus. The Jets and Chargers still have a long list to cut down, but the Colts assistant should be among the favorites for either job.
Meanwhile, the Texans just missed out on one of their best chances to bring a strong coach to Houston. After another four-win year, the team has yet to maximize Deshaun Watson’s potential and could soon see their competitive window close. Already, speculation has begun about Watson forcing his way out to play for a different organization.
The Texans will need to get their act together quickly or they could see their franchise quarterback move on.
