The Jacksonville Jaguars named seven captains ahead of their 2021 season on Wednesday afternoon. It came as no surprise to anyone inside the organization or on the outside that quarterback Trevor Lawrence was one of them.
Urban Meyer announced the Jaguars captains for the upcoming season with some special help from each player’s friends and families on Wednesday. Lawrence’s wife Marissa shared the news with the rest of the organization before the rookie quarterback got to celebrate with the rest of his teammates.
Lawrence joined Zach Wilson and 2020 No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow as the only rookie quarterbacks in the past two seasons to be named permanent captains. Needless to say, he was honored to be chosen by his peers.
“It’s a really cool feeling, especially as a younger guy, just having that support from my teammates,” Lawrence said, via Michael DiRocco of ESPN. “Really, like I said [after] being named a starter and now a captain, nothing changes. Same expectation, and now it’s time to go out there and win some games.
“But I’m really excited. It’s definitely an honor. It’s a cool moment for me to be named a captain with those other guys, just a bunch of great guys in the locker room. We had a ton of guys that got votes, but [it’s] definitely really cool.”

Lawrence reportedly received the third-most votes from his teammates, which is a testament to how much of an impact he’s made in his short time with the Jaguars. If his peers and the coaching staff have that much faith in him, he’ll should carry plenty of confidence into his NFL debut.
“I was impressed that he [Lawrence] was up there,” Meyer said, via DiRocco. “That’s a credit to him.”
Lawrence will join linebacker Myles Jack, defensive end Josh Allen, cornerback Shaquill Griffin, wide receiver Marvin Jones, safety Rayshawn Jenkins and center Brandon Linder as the Jaguars 2021 captains. All seven players will don a “C” on their jersey when they take the field this Sunday against the Houston Texans.
