Late last night, those in the United States who couldn’t stay up to watch the Olympics woke up to stunning news.
United States superstar gymnast Simone Biles withdrew from the women’s team gymnastics competition in Tokyo. Without Biles, the U.S. women’s gymnastics team still won the silver medal.
Biles said she was battling through a mental health issue and didn’t want to put herself at risk of injury – or cost her team a medal. “I didn’t want to go into any of the other events second-guessing myself,” Biles said, per the Associated Press. “So, I thought it would be better if I took a step back and let these girls go out there and do their job.”
Well, in the hours since she withdrew from competition, fans from all over the world have shown support for her. After winning a silver medal and taking a few hours to rest, her teammate Sunisa Lee also had a message for fans.
She doesn’t want to hear anything about Biles exiting from the games or the U.S. team “owing” anyone a gold medal.

With Biles out, Lee scored a 15.4 on the uneven bars – the highest mark of the Tokyo Olympics thus far – to lead the U.S. to silver.
