On Saturday afternoon, No. 1 Alabama entered its game against Mercer as a hefty favorite.
In fact, some sports books didn’t even choose to offer odds on the game because they thought the Crimson Tide would win by so much. At the end of the day, though, Alabama didn’t win by as much as it probably should have.
The Crimson Tide jumped out to a 38-0 lead before Mercer scored its first points of the game in the third quarter. Just 10 minutes later, the Bears added another touchdown to cut Alabama’s lead to 45-14.
Following Mercer’s second touchdown, head coach Nick Saban was furious with his defense. He lit into a few players as they were coming off the field.

This is nothing new for Saban, who always finds something to criticize. After the team’s blowout win over No. 14 Miami last weekend, Saban said his team didn’t prove it could play for 60 minutes.
“We haven’t proven that we can play for 60 minutes,” he said. “Then we come out on Monday and were really not ready to practice. I guess because of respect we have for the opponent, I don’t really know all that. Or maybe it’s what they read on social media or in the media or whatever after one half of a game this season.”
Of course, that drive for perfection is a large part of why he has seven national titles.
