For players and coaches, the intensity ratchets up when you’re in an elimination game, like the one Texas and Tennessee are involved in at the College World Series.
That probably explains what led to Tennessee assistant coach Ross Kivett’s ejection this afternoon. Kivett, who has been a volunteer assistant at UT since 2017, was ejected in the fourth inning with the score tied at 4.
He reportedly slammed his fist down on the dugout railing after Tennessee issued a walk. While Kivett was apparently frustrated with the home plate umpire’s strike zone, it was the third base umpire was the one who gave him the heave-ho all the way from across the field.
Kivett then tossed his binder after being sent to the showers.

With Kivett watching from the clubhouse, Tennessee is facing an 8-4 deficit in the top of the eighth inning. The Vols need at least a four-run rally to stave off elimination, and they have only six outs to get it done.
