Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts told ESPN’s Gene Wojciechowski that Scott Frost isn’t “coaching for his job” this season. With the Cornhuskers’ season opener almost over, Alberts may want to change his stance on that topic.
The Cornhuskers started off strong against the Fighting Illini this Saturday, jumping out to an early 9-2 lead in the first half. Everything has fallen apart since then, as they gave up 28 unanswered points.
While there is still time for Nebraska to turn things around against Illinois today, the reality is Frost’s squad is making sloppy mistakes that just shouldn’t happen anymore.
“Scott Frost has spent 3 years talking about culture change and changing things,” David Eickholt of 247Sports said. “Now, same mistakes as year one. Bret Bielema’s first game at Illinois and he’s thoroughly out-coaching Frost after his starting QB left with injury. Crunch time for NE. See how they respond.”

What makes this afternoon’s performance from Nebraska so frustrating is that Frost said this year’s team has strong leadership. So far, we haven’t seen that.
“Coaches are always looking for ways they can do things better,” Frost said. “If you’re not evolving, then you’re stale and stagnant. It’s been three years of hard work. Day-by-day, we get better and better. Our unity’s better, our leadership’s better and our culture’s better.”
Nebraska’s first half included a safety, a missed PAT, two huge personal fouls and fumble returned for a TD. Scott Frost’s putative “best team at Nebraska” trails Illinois and its backup QB 16-9 at halftime. It’s fine.

Almost every time Nebraska struggles, college football fans bring up Frost’s previous job. Today’s game is no different.
“I think it’s official that Scott Frost needed UCF way more than UCF needed Scott Frost,” one college football fan tweeted.

Nebraska trails 30-16 heading into the fourth quarter against Illinois.
We’ll see if Frost can lead the Cornhuskers to an epic comeback and silence his critics in the process.
