Late Wednesday night, the baseball world learned some shocking news when Chicago White Sox catcher Yermin Mercedes appeared to retire.
The 28-year-old Dominican Republic took to Instagram with a simple message, “it’s over.” He went on to state that he needed to take some time away from the game after being demoted to the minor leagues.
Mercedes was named the MLB’s Rookie of the Month in April of this season. He hit .415 in April with five home runs and 16 RBI. After he struggled in May and June, he was sent down.
He apparently wasn’t pleased with the decision and decided to walk away from the game. Well, at least for a little while.
On Thursday afternoon, the White Sox announced Mercedes is in uniform with the Charlotte Knights and is part of the active roster.

Mercedes himself took to Instagram just a few minutes after the news was announced. He published a picture of a phoenix, appearing to hint at his rebirth into the baseball world just 18 hours after he walked away from the game.
It’s unclear what exactly happened, but Mercedes appears to be back.
