Sunday Olympic Sport roundup

Wrestling

The Sun Devils finally made it to Ames, Iowa after a schedule change. No. 8 Arizona State (6-0) came out with two wins over No. 13 Iowa State (9-3) and Northern Iowa (4-4).

In the top 15 matchup, Arizona State came out victorious 20-15 over the Cyclones. The Sun Devils best led the way. No. 3 Brandon Courtney (125-pound) started the day with a win over Aden Reeves. No. 6 Michael McGee (133) and No. 7 Cohlton Schultz (HWT) each earned respective ranked wins over Iowa State’s No. 25 Zach Redding (133) and No. 6 Gann Gremmel (HWT). No. 3 Kordell Norfleet (197) and No. 4 Anthony Valencia (165) stayed undefeated as well. Trey Munoz (174) also defeated No. 25 Julien Broderson to help the Sun Devils earn the win.

Courtney, McGee, Schultz, Norfleet, Valencia and Munoz all won their matches against Northern Iowa. The Sun Devils also got wins from Corey Crooks (149) and No. 12 Jacori Teemer (157) on their way to a 24-10 win.

Up next for Arizona State is the Pac-12 Championships on Feb. 28 at Oregon State.

Water Polo

No. 6 Arizona State (3-0) defeated No. 17 San Diego State (0-3) for the third straight time on Sunday morning, pulling past the Aztecs 11-5 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

The Sun Devils had 10 goals over the last three periods, including two each from Luca Petovary, Emma Fraser, Bente Rogge and Alison Cameron.

Fraser also added in three assists to give her five points overall, while Blaire McDowell, Lara Kiss and Emily Van Zonneveld added goals of their own.

Goalie Itzahiana Baca started and allowed just one goal on 20 shots to limit SDSU. Up next, ASU will host a doubleheader with California Baptist on Feb. 20.

Gymnastics

The Sun Devils headed to Berkeley for a Top 25 matchup. Once again No. 14 Arizona State (2-4) set a high mark, its second highest score of the year, but fell short to No. 16 Cal (3-0) 197.100-196.650.

Arizona State once again scored at least a 49 on each event for the second straight competition. The two programs had the same team scores on vault and floor, but Cal’s slightly better performances on bars and beam proved to be the difference.

Cal had a great individual performance Nevaeh DeSouza, who won the All-Around title with a 39.600 overall score after she earned a 9.900 on each event. Arizona State’s standouts on Sunday were a pair of freshmen. Anaya Smith’s 9.925 earned her the vault title and after a 9.950 on vault, Sarah Clark topped everyone else.

After Stanford had to cancel its meet with Arizona State, the Sun Devils won’t return to action until Feb. 28 at Washington.
