The New York Yankees are presumably going to be buyers at this year’s trade deadline, and a new report says they’ve inquired about Colorado Rockies star Trevor Story.
Story, a three-time All-Star shortstop, is a pending free agent. The Rockies have nothing to play for this year, and since they are not going to be able to sign Story long-term, it makes sense for them to trade the 28-year-old.
According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Yankees are just one of the teams that have “checked in” about Story, so there’s not much smoke here just yet. However, this report indicates that the team is at least considering a major move.
Entering this weekend’s series against the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox, the Yankees are 50-44, seven games out of first place in the division and 3.5 games out of a Wild Card spot.
The Yankees are among the teams that have checked in on Trevor Story. Presumably, if they followed through, they’d move Gleyber Torres back to second base.

Story’s slash line is down this year–.243/.316/.423–but he has still hit 11 homers, driven in 43 runs and stolen 17 bases in 82 games. He’d be an upgrade for the Yankees defensively at shortstop, and would enable them to move Gleyber Torres back to second base where he is most comfortable.
The MLB trade deadline is next Friday, July 30. Trevor Story will be dealt before then; it’s just a matter of where and when.
