Zach Wilson Has Honest Admission About His Play At Jets Practice

August 8, 2021 by The Spun

Zach Wilson at the 2021 NFL Draft

No. 2 pick Zach Wilson is the overwhelmingly likely starter for a New York Jets team without depth behind him.

It sounds like he may need to ramp up his play, or the Jets could be in a precarious position. While rookies like Trevor Lawrence, Trey Lance, and Justin Fields have turned heads at practice, Wilson admits that his play hasn’t been up to par.

Wilson has flashed a huge arm during Jets practice, but the results in team drills today left plenty to be desired. According to Connor Hughes of The Athletic, he was 11-of-24 for 112 yards and two interceptions.

In seven drives leading the offense in the scrimmage, they managed just three points. The offense was forced to punt four times, along with Wilson’s two turnovers. The BYU product knows that isn;’t going to cut.

#Jets QB Zach Wilson on his practice: “Not great”

Respect to Zach Wilson for the honest takeaway. Expectations are higher for rookie quarterbacks than they used to be, and the performance of guys like Lance and Fields, who may not even start Week 1, doesn’t help.

The New York Jets don’t have other attractive options, either. Little used quarterbacks Mike White and James Morgan were the only other quarterbacks in camp until the recent signing of veteran Josh Johnson. That group makes things pretty clear, though: the Jets are going to sink or swim with Wilson in 2021 and beyond.
