9 total, most since 2008

The last time Arizona made the College World Series, in 2021, it did so with a team that included seven players who would get drafted the following month.

This year’s Omaha squad did two better.

The Wildcats had seven players taken on the second day of the 2025 MLB Draft on Monday, upping their total to nine. That’s tied for 5th-most in school history and the most since Arizona had a school-record 11 picked in 2008.

Shortstop Mason White went in the 4th round to the Boston Red Sox, catcher Adonys Guzman was a 5th-round of the Pittsburgh Pirates, right-hander Julian Tonghini went in the 7th round to the Washington Nationals, righty Hunter Alberini went in the 11th round to the Kansas City Royals, righty Casey Hintz went in the 16th round to the Seattle Mariners, righty Raul Garayzar went in the 19th round to the Arizona Diamondbacks and righty Michael Hilker Jr. went in the 20th round to the Minnesota Twins.

That’s in addition to outfielders Brendan Summerhill (1st round, 42nd overall, Tampa Bay Rays) and Aaron Walton (2nd round, 66th overall, Cleveland Indians) getting drafted on Sunday.

White was the No. 118 selection, the same one Boston used in 2016 to select former Arizona two-way star Bobby Dalbec. The No. 118 pick has a ‘bonus slot’ value of $642,200.

White finishes his UA career with 49 home runs, second-most in school history, while also setting the career record with 111 extra-base hits. A graduate of Salpointe Catholic High School, White was a third-generation Wildcat player who as a junior hit .320 with 20 homers, 73 RBI and the game-winning hit to send Arizona to the College World Series.

Pittsburgh used the No. 144 pick on Guzman, the first Wildcat drafted by that franchise since Matt Fraizer in 2019. The No. 144 pick has a ‘bonus slot’ value of $499,000.

Guzman, who began his career at Boston College before spending the last two seasons with the Wildcats, led the team with a .328 average in 2025 while hitting nine homers with 44 RBI. He hit .439 in the postseason including 5 of 9 during the World Series.

Tonghini, a senior who transferred in from Indiana before this season, went 201st overall to the Nationals, who last year took UA lefty Jackson Kent in the fourth round. The No. 201 pick has a ‘bonus slot’ value of $302,500, though as a college senior without leverage to return to school he’s likely to sign for much less. Last year UA senior pitcher Clark Candiotti went in the fourth round to the San Diego Padres and signed for $80,000.

Tonghini was 5-2 with a 4.26 ERA in 22 relief appearances, striking out 44 batters in 25.1 innings. He fanned seven in three innings at West Virginia on March 21 when the UA struck out a school-record 29 batters in a 16-inning win.

Arizona’s bullpen, which was a strength of the team all season, saw four more arms get picked in the second half of the draft. Alberini was No. 338 overall, Hintz was No. 482, Garayzar No. 543 and Hilker No. 599 out of 615 total selections.

Alberini was 1-0 with a 3.48 ERA in 18 appearances, striking out 33 in 20.2 innings. Hintz went 7-4 with a 5.56 ERA and two saves in 24 games covering 55 innings, while Garayzar went 2-0 with a 2.81 ERA in 21 games including eight starts with three of those coming in the postseason and Hilker was 2-1 with a 6.45 ERA in 22.1 innings and his final appearance included a memorable exit from the mound during the Super Regionals.

The last time Kansas City drafted an Arizona player (not a signee) was JC Cloney in 2017. Hintz is the first Wildcat picked by Seattle since Louis Boyd in 2017, while Garayzar—a Rio Rico native—is the first UA player taken by the D’Backs since Kevin Ginkel in 2016 and Hilker is the first to go to the Twins since David Coulon in 2008.

The nine draft picks were tied for 4th-most in college baseball, same number taken by national champion LSU. Arkansas and Florida State had 11 and Georgia had 10.

ASU, which made its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2021 but did not get out of regionals, also had nine players drafted.

As far as Wildcat signees go, the only one to get picked was California prep righty Cameron Millar, who went in the third round (No. 97) to the Royals. Kansas City kept top signee Blake Wolters from making it to campus in 2023, signing him for $2.8 million.

The No. 97 pick’s ‘bonus slot’ value is $788,500, and traditionally 99 percent of players taken in the first 10 rounds end up signing.

Another player whom the UA signed in November (but who was not expected to join the team) also was taken by the Royals. Dylan Wood, a righty from California, went in the 19th round.
