The longball has not been a big part of Arizona’s offense this season, with only 14 home runs hit through the first 22 games. On Sunday the Wildcats increased that total by nearly 30 percent.
The UA hit four homers, two by catcher Adonys Guzman, in an 11-4 win at West Virginia to take the weekend series.
Arizona (18-5, 5-1 Big 12) scored six runs in the top of the 8th inning to erase a 4-3 deficit, with the go-ahead runs coming on a 2-run shot by Mason White. It was White’s 33rd career homer, tying him for 7th on the UA career list.
Guzman, who had two homers this season and three for his career before Sunday, hit a 2-run homer in the 3rd that gave Arizona a 3-0 lead. Maddox Mihalakis had gotten the Wildcats on the board in the 2nd with a solo shot, his first of the season.
A 2-run homer from Guzman in the 9th capped the scoring. Guzman was 3 for 5 with three RBI, giving him 17 to match his RBI total for all of last season.
West Virginia (19-3, 2-2) scored twice in the 3rd and twice in the 4th to take a 4-3 lead but had only two baserunners over the final five innings against Arizona’s top two relievers. Tony Pluta threw two hitless innings and Casey Hintz pitched the final three, allowing only a walk, to improve to 5-0.
The UA returns home for its next four games, beginning with a nonconference tilt Wednesday against Seattle before hosting Baylor over the weekend in Big 12 play.
