Now tied for 1st with Utah
Play with fire enough, you’re eventually going to get burned.
Arizona’s recent trend of giving up late leads came back to bite it on Sunday, blowing a 5-run advantage in the 8th inning and eventually falling 9-8 in 13 innings at Washington.
It was the second straight loss for the UA (26-16, 14-7 Pac-12) after a school-record 11 consecutive in league play, and combined with Utah’s sweep of UCLA has the Wildcats and Utes tied for first place.
UW walked it off with a 1-out single in the bottom of the 13th, which was going to be the final inning due to a travel curfew.
Arizona led 3-0 and 8-3 only to give up both advantages, with Washington (16-20-1, 8-13) scoring five times in the bottom of the 8th off the bullpen. Kyler Heyne allowed a 3-run home run and left with a man on second and one out, then with two down Casey Hintz gave up a 2-run shot to tie it.
The Huskies had a chance to walk it off in the 9th against Anthony ‘Tonko’ Susac, but after allowing the first two on and having runners on second and third he got a strikeout and groundout to force extras.
The UA took a 3-0 lead in the 2nd on a 3-run homer by Andrew Cain, who was 2 for 4. After Washington tied it in the bottom of the 3rd off Cam Walty, who went five innings, the Wildcats scored four in the 6th including three on a homer by Blake McDonald.
McDonald had three hits as did TJ Adams, who added an RBI.
Arizona added another run in the 7th but after that couldn’t produce anything despite numerous chances. The Wildcats got the leadoff man on in the 10th, 11th and 12th but got nothing from them, squandering second and third with one out in the 12th.
The Wildcats lost their first series since dropping two of three at Oregon in late March. They return to action Tuesday at Hi Corbett Field against Grand Canyon before hosting Standard next weekend.
