The low point of Arizona’s season came on March 26, when it fell behind 9-1 at home to New Mexico State en route to a 12-9 loss.
It’s been almost nothing but highs for the Wildcats since then, including Wednesday night in a revenge game against the Aggies.
The UA used a pair of big innings and solid pitching from some unheralded arms in a 12-2 win in 7 innings at NMSU.
Arizona (25-14) won for the 15th time in 16 games since that NMSU loss, improving to 9-8 on the road this season. Last year the Wildcats are 4-14 on the road.
Seven consecutive 2-out hits in the top of the 3rd gave Arizona 5-0 lead. Garen Caufield, who was 2 for 3 and walked twice, doubled in Brendan Summerhill ahead of a 3-run home run from Mason White. A fifth run came in on a throwing error.
A 6-run 7th put the UA up 12-2, putting the mercy rule in effect. The frame included a 3-run homer from Maddox Mihalakis, his first of the season, and a 2-run shot from Tommy Splaine.
Seven Arizona players had at least two hits, with Emilio Corona going 3 for 4.
On the mound, Arizona got four shutout innings from a trio of pitchers who hadn’t appeared in a game in April. Raul Garayzar and Bryce McKnight threw scoreless innings before Matthew Martinez tossed two clean frames. Jaeden Swanberg pitched the 5th and 6th, giving up a 2-run homer in the 6th, and Casey Hintz closed it out with a scoreless 7th that ended on a double play.
Arizona continues its road trip Friday at Washington. The Wildcats, in first place in the Pac-12 at 13-5, have won a school-record 10 Pac-12 games.
