The Pac-12 already knows how good freshman Regan Shockey is. The centerfielder was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for a league-leading fourth time on Monday. Now, the rest of the country knows how good she is, too.
On Thursday, Shockey was named a finalist for the Tucci/NFCA Freshman of the Year award. She is the only freshman from the Pac-12 to make the list of 25 finalists.

Shockey’s .420 batting average leads the Wildcats and is ranked 40th in the nation. She is the only member of the team with qualifying stats who is currently hitting .400 or better.
Among Division I freshmen, Shockey’s batting average is third in the nation. She trails only Florida State’s Jaysoni Beachum and Harvard’s Sophie Sun. Beachum and Shockey are the only two freshmen whose batting averages are in the top 85 who play in a major conference.
Shockey leads Arizona and is tied with Utah senior Haley Denning for the overall Pac-12 lead with 68 hits. That puts Shockey seventh in Wildcat program history for hits by a freshman.
On the national stage, Shockey’s 68 hits are tied for sixth overall in Division I and are second among DI freshmen. Boise State’s Sophia Knight leads all Division I freshmen with 69 hits.
Shockey and the No. 19 Wildcats go on the road to play No. 9 UCLA in a three-game series beginning on Friday, Apr. 26. It will be the final Pac-12 series for Arizona before it moves to the Big 12 next season.
