For the second time in three years Arizona will have one of its men’s golfers participate in the British Open, also known as The Open Championship. This time that Wildcat will be doing it on the heels of a title.
UA rising senior Filip Jakubcik won the European Amateur Championship on Saturday, beating the field by three strokes at Vasatorps Golfklubb in Sweden. In doing so he earned a spot in the British Open, joining former teammate Tiger Christensen in 2023 as Wildcats to make that golf major.

Jakubcik, a native of the Czech Republic who went to high school in Florida, shot a 5-under 67 in the final round to finish at -8. He entered the final round in a three-way tie with Denmark’s Kristian Bressum, who plays at East Tennessee State, and Germany’s Finn Koelle, who plays at Washington.
A First Team All-Big 12 selection, Jakubcik is the third UA golfer to win a national or international amateur tourney, the first outside the US. Ricky Barnes (2002) and Eric Meeks (1998) won the U.S. Amateur.
The British Open is set for July 17-20 in Scotland. It is the last of the four majors on the PGA Tour following the U.S. Open, which earlier this month included UA rising senior Zach Pollo.
