
The MLB All-Star break is here, making this a prime time to check in on how former Arizona Wildcats are faring in the big leagues this season.
Mark Melancon, CP, San Diego Padres
- 2021 stats: 2-1, 2.04 ERA, 27 saves, 39.2 IP, 9 ER, 30 H, 16 BB, 31 K
- Age: 36
- Years in league: 13
- Wins Above Replacement (WAR): 1.4
- Outlook: The MLB leader in saves, Melancon was named an All-Star for the fourth time in his career and the first since 2016 when he pitched for the Pirates and Nationals. This is Melancon’s first year with San Diego, which, of course, is used to seeing former Wildcats dominate out of the bullpen. (Shout out to Trevor Hoffman!)
Bobby Dalbec, 1B, Boston Red Sox
- 2021 stats: 72 GP, 67 GS, 10 HR, 36 RBI, 10 2B, .219 AVG/.264 OBP/.409 SLG
- Age: 26
- Years in league: 2
- WAR: -1.2
- Outlook: Dalbec’s power has been on display this season, but he has 95 strikeouts in 242 at-bats and has received poor metrics defensively (-1.2 dWAR).
Robert Refsnyder, OF, Minnesota Twins
- 2021 stats: 18 G, 2 HR, 10 RBI, .321 AVG/.371 OBP/.500 SLG
- Age: 30
- Years in league: 6
- WAR: 0.3
- Outlook: Refsnyder is having the best year of his MLB career, though it’s a small sample size and he’s currently on the 10-day injured with with a strained hamstring. Prior to this season, Refsnyder, the 2012 College World Series Most Outstanding Player, was a .217 career hitter in 181 career games.
Scott Kingery, UTL, Philadelphia Phillies
- 2021 stats: 15 G, 19 AB, .053 AVG/.053 OBP/.053 SLG
- Age: 27
- Years in league: 4
- WAR: -0.4
- Outlook: Once a promising young player, Kingery has spent most of the season in Triple A. The good news is he’s making $4.25 million this season as part of a six-year, $24 million extension he signed after a strong season in 2019.
Kevin Newman, SS, Pittsburgh Pirates
- 2021 stats: 83 G, 19 AB, 8 2B, 3 HR, 13 RBI, .210 AVG/.253 OBP/.273 SLG
- Age: 27
- Years in league: 4
- WAR: -0.1
- Outlook: Like Kingery, Newman hasn’t been playing as well as he did earlier in his career. His best season came in 2019 when he hit .308 with 12 homers in 130 games.
Jared Oliva, OF, Pittsburgh Pirates
- 2021 stats: 11 G, 30 AB, 2 2B, .148 AVG/.233 OBP/.222 SLG
- Age: 25
- Years in league: 2
- WAR: -0.5
- Outlook: Oliva has bounced between MLB and Triple A. He’s a career .270 hitter in the minors but hasn’t been able to find much success at the plate in the big leagues.
Tylor Megill, SP, New York Mets
- 2021 stats: 4 GS, 18 IP, 3.50 ERA, 14 H, 7 ER, 9 BB, 26 K
- Age: 25
- Years in league: Rookie
- WAR: 0.2
- Outlook: A reliever at Arizona, Megill made his MLB debut in late June and has been a solid fill-in starter for the Mets, who are in first place in the NL East.
Konner Wade, RP, Baltimore Orioles
- 2021 stats: 1.2 IP, 32.40 ERA, 7 H, 6 ER, 1 K
- Age: 29
- Years in league: Rookie
- WAR: -0.2
- Outlook: After seven seasons in the minors, Wade finally got a shot at the Big Leagues on June 26 when Baltimore called him up from Triple A Norfolk and used him out of the bullpen in 12-4 loss to Toronto.
Kevin Ginkel, RP, Arizona Diamondbacks
- 2021 stats: 28.1 IP, 30 H, 20 ER, 7 HR, 14 BB, 31 K
- Age: 27
- Years in league: 3
- WAR: -0.7
- Outlook: After posting a 1.48 ERA in his rookie season, Ginkel has struggled over the past two seasons, posting ERAs north of 6.00. He’s currently pitching for Triple A Reno.
Daniel Ponce de Leon, RP, St. Louis Cardinals
- 2021 stats: 17 G, 24.1 IP, 7.03 ERA, 27 H, 19 ER, 4 HR, 13 BB, 17 K
- Age: 27
- Years in league: 4
- WAR: -0.7
- Outlook: Ponce de Leon, who pitched three innings at Arizona as a freshman before transferring, has been a quality spot starter for the Cardinals over the past several seasons but has been hit hard this year. 15 of his 17 appearances have come out of the bullpen.
Andy Burns, UTL, Los Angeles Dodgers
- 2021 stats: 9 G, 11 AB, 3 H, 1 2B, 3 BB, .273 AVG/.467 OBP/.364 SLG
- Age: 30
- Years in league: 2
- WAR: -0.8
- Outlook: Burns, who arrived at Arizona in 2011 as a transfer from Kentucky and was drafted before playing a game at the UA, made his MLB debut in 2015 and worked his way back to the big leagues this season, receiving a call-up in June. He made two starts in nine games before being sent back down to Triple A.
Willie Calhoun, OF, Texas Rangers
- 2021 stats: 59 G, 226 AB, 52 H, 8 2B, 2 3B, 5 HR, 19 BB, .254 AVG/.323 OBP/.385 SLG
- Age: 26
- Years in league: 5
- WAR: 0.2
- Outlook: Calhoun, who transferred from Arizona after one season, is an everyday starter for the Rangers. He hit 21 homers for Texas in 2019.
