The MLB All-Star break is here, making this a prime time to check in on how former Arizona Wildcats are faring in the big leagues this season.

Outlook: The MLB leader in saves, Melancon was named an All-Star for the fourth time in his career and the first since 2016 when he pitched for the Pirates and Nationals. This is Melancon’s first year with San Diego, which, of course, is used to seeing former Wildcats dominate out of the bullpen. (Shout out to Trevor Hoffman!)

Outlook: Dalbec’s power has been on display this season, but he has 95 strikeouts in 242 at-bats and has received poor metrics defensively (-1.2 dWAR).

Outlook: Refsnyder is having the best year of his MLB career, though it’s a small sample size and he’s currently on the 10-day injured with with a strained hamstring. Prior to this season, Refsnyder, the 2012 College World Series Most Outstanding Player, was a .217 career hitter in 181 career games.

Outlook: Once a promising young player, Kingery has spent most of the season in Triple A. The good news is he’s making $4.25 million this season as part of a six-year, $24 million extension he signed after a strong season in 2019.

Outlook: Like Kingery, Newman hasn’t been playing as well as he did earlier in his career. His best season came in 2019 when he hit .308 with 12 homers in 130 games.

Outlook: Oliva has bounced between MLB and Triple A. He’s a career .270 hitter in the minors but hasn’t been able to find much success at the plate in the big leagues.

Outlook: A reliever at Arizona, Megill made his MLB debut in late June and has been a solid fill-in starter for the Mets, who are in first place in the NL East.

Outlook: After seven seasons in the minors, Wade finally got a shot at the Big Leagues on June 26 when Baltimore called him up from Triple A Norfolk and used him out of the bullpen in 12-4 loss to Toronto.

Outlook: After posting a 1.48 ERA in his rookie season, Ginkel has struggled over the past two seasons, posting ERAs north of 6.00. He’s currently pitching for Triple A Reno.

Outlook: Ponce de Leon, who pitched three innings at Arizona as a freshman before transferring, has been a quality spot starter for the Cardinals over the past several seasons but has been hit hard this year. 15 of his 17 appearances have come out of the bullpen.

Outlook: Burns, who arrived at Arizona in 2011 as a transfer from Kentucky and was drafted before playing a game at the UA, made his MLB debut in 2015 and worked his way back to the big leagues this season, receiving a call-up in June. He made two starts in nine games before being sent back down to Triple A.
