Arizona is scheduled to fly to Omaha on Wednesday afternoon in advance of the College World Series that begins on Saturday. Whether relievers Randy Abshier and Gil Luna will be on that charter flight is unknown.
UA coach Jay Johnson had no update Tuesday on the status of Abshier and Luna, a pair of left-handers who were suspended for the Super Regionals for what has been described as a “recent off-campus incident involving other university students.”
Abshier, a sophomore, is 4-0 with a 2.91 ERA in 20 appearances while Luna, a junior, has a team-best 1.69 ERA to go with a 1-0 record with 31 strikeouts in 21.1 innings this season. Each appeared in the regionals, with both pitching in Arizona’s regional-final win over UC Santa Barbara, and their improvement throughout the season has been a key part of the Wildcats’ bullpen success.
Johnson said he is unsure if changes are allowed to be made to his CWS roster after the fact. He has not had to submit a final roster yet.
Arizona, which opens the CWS on Saturday at 4 p.m. PT against Vanderbilt, will practice at Hi Corbett Field on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. After landing in Omaha the team will practice at Creighton, then work out Thursday at Nebraska-Omaha before getting to practice inside TD Ameritrade Park on Friday.
