Arizona Coyotes legend Shane Doan’s playing days may be behind him, but that doesn’t mean he’s done competing at the international level.
Hockey Canada announced on Friday the management and coaching staff who will lead the men’s national team in the 2021 Channel Onc Cup and 2021 Spengler Cup, both of which take place in December.
Doan was named as the general manager, while Blair Mackasey will serve as the assistant GM.
The coaching staff will consist of Claude Julien as head coach, with Bruce Boudreau and Scott Walker joining as assistants.
“This is a tremendous staff with years of experience at the highest levels of our game, and we are excited to work with them through December,” Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada senior VP of hockey operations, said in a press release.
“As part of our preparations for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, we wanted to ensure there were contingency plans in place in the event NHL players do not participate in Beijing. Taking part in the Channel One Cup and Spengler Cup ensures an opportunity to evaluate European-based players at a pair of prestigious tournaments against world-class competition.”
The former Coyote is coming off of a 2021 IIHF World Championship with Team Canada in which it won the gold medal with Doan serving as the assistant general manager.
He also was part of the management staff when the team won the 2019 Spengler Cup and served as a consultant when Team Canada took silver at the 2019 IIHF World Championship.
As a player, Doan played for Canada in six IIHF World Championships.
He won the gold in 2003 and 2007, and took home silver in 2005, 2008 and 2009.
Doan also won the 2004 World Cup of Hockey for his country at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games.
He has been serving as the chief hockey development officer for the Coyotes since January.
