Future Hall Of Famer Breaks Pittsburgh Penguins All-Time Points Record

December 21, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

One of the all-time greats, Sidney Crosby, has passed Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux for the franchise lead in points by a Pittsburgh Penguin. Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby assisted on a goal against the Montreal Canadiens to pass Lemieux’s record of 1,723 points. Crosby now leads the Penguins’ all-time list in scoring with 1,724. He has overcame conussions and injury concerns. However, Crosby’s longevity in the back half of his career have been phenomenal. As a franchise icon for the Penguins, “Sid the Kid” has spent two decades defining Pittsburgh Penguins hockey in the Steel City.

A Historic Climb from Prospect to A Franchise Great

Drafted first overall in 2005, Sidney Crosby was a highly-touted prospect who somehow exceeded the astronomical expectations placed on him as a teenager. The draft lottery ended up being between the Penguins and Anaheim Ducks. Luckily, for the Penguins, Pittsburgh received the opportunity to draft Crosby first overall. As soon as he arrived in Pittsburgh, Crosby stayed with the aforementioned Lemieux in his home. Here, he was mentored by one of the best players in NHL history. In his lengthy NHL career, Crosby has become one of the most accomplished players to ever play the sport. He’s scored over 100 points six times. Additionally, he’s passed Wayne Gretzky for the most consecutive point-per-game seasons last season with 20. Additionally, Crosby has tied his own childhood idol, Steve Yzerman, as the longest-serving captain of an NHL team. He is in his 19th season as the Penguins captain. Also importantly, Crosby moves into eighth on the all-time points list.

From Saving the Franchise to Achieving the Pinnacle of the Sport

Sidney Crosby has been at the helm of the Penguins when they were in danger of being relocated. Without his arrival in Pittsburgh, there’s a chance the Penguins would’ve moved to cities like Kansas many years ago. As soon as Crosby arrived in Pittsburgh, things turned around financially. The Penguins spent years setting sell-out records. The franchises value increasing high enough to be valued at over $1.7 billion. The captain has also earned three Olympic Gold medals, two of which he was the captain of Team Canada, and one of which he scored the overtime gold medal winner. He has also captained the Penguins to three Stanley Cups, earning back-to-back Conn Smythe trophies for playoff MVP in 2016 and 2017.

A Legend Still Going

Now in his 21st season, Crosby doesn’t look like he’s slowing down much any time soon. His 19 goals and 35 points in 33 games as a 38-year-old lead Pittsburgh in scoring. Crosby still has two years left on his contract, including this one, and may continue pushing for a couple of years longer than that, as he hasn’t lost much of a step in recent years. With the 2,000 point mark far, but close enough in the horizon, this could be another milestone for one of the best in the history of the NHL to chase. Until then, Sidney Crosby has achieved the honours of being the highest scoring Pittsburgh Penguin of all time.
