New York Rangers Captain Sustains Apparent Lower-Body Injury

September 30, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The morning of September 29th, 2025, New York Rangers captain J.T. Miller left practice, seemingly, with a lower-body injury. We will be sure to pass along any updates once they become available.

Oh no: Miller went lunging to save a puck here and came up favoring his leg. You can see he’s in pain and he heads off to the locker room. #NYR pic.twitter.com/poxnzlOFNk

Early Analysis on Possible J.T. Miller Injury

As you can tell from Vince Z. Mercogliano’s Twitter post, the injury appears to be non-contact. During a power play practice, Miller drops and lunges to push the puck past a penalty killer. It takes him about 10-15 seconds to get back to his feet, as play stops around him once the players realize he’s down. The good news for Rangers fans is that he’s able to get himself up and skates off the ice. However, that doesn’t mean the injury cannot be significant. Miller’s skate off the ice was far from graceful. Miller did not return to practice and was not available to the media after practice.

The 32-year-old is currently being evaluated. There is no current update on the severity of the injury, or whether or not the injury will keep him out of the preseason or regular season.

Miller was named the 29th captain in franchise history before the start of training camp. Miller played in 72 games last season. And the three seasons before that, he played at least 80 games in each season.

Head coach Mike Sullivan was not attending the practice when the incident occurred. He is in Long Island preparing for a preseason game tonight that Miller was not in the lineup for.

Miller was traded last season from the Vancouver Canucks to the New York Rangers on January 31, 2025. In 32 games played with the Rangers, Miller scored 13 goals and recorded 22 assists for a total of 35 points. As we said, updates will be available when the team announces the severity of the injury to Miller. Hopefully for Ranger fans, it is nothing serious.
