3 D-backs prospects featured in McDaniel’s midseason top-50 list

August 7, 2021 by ArizonaSports.com - 98.7 FM

It’s been a tough year for the Arizona Diamondbacks on the field, but they continue to build for the future with their farm system.

Three D-back prospects made the latest installment of ESPN’s MLB insider Kiley McDaniel’s midseason top 50 prospects: No. 20 Alek Thomas, No. 28 Jordan Lawlar and No. 31 Corbin Carroll.

Drafted No. 63 overall in the 2018 MLB Entry Draft, Thomas quickly shot up the D-backs rankings and is currently the organization’s fourth best prospect, according to MLB.com.

Thomas has spent the 2021 season at Double-A Amarillo with a slash line of .273/.368/.477 while adding eight stolen bases.

As for Lawlar, the shortstop is one of the newest prospects within the organization after being taken No. 6 overall in the 2021 draft.

Lawlar lands on the list as McDaniel’s highest ranked 2021 draftee. A true five-tool prospect, he was named the Gatorade Texas High School Player of the Year after batting .412 with six homers, 37 RBIs and 32 stolen bases in 36 total games.

Missing the 2021 season with a shoulder injury, Carroll has seen his name fall down projection boards. He was listed as McDaniel’s No. 27 overall prospect prior to this season.

With that being said, Carroll remains Arizona’s best future asset on MLB.com.

The No. 16 overall pick in the 2019 draft, the outfielder was regarded as one of the best hitters in his class.

Prior to his injury, Carroll got off to a hot start at plus-A affiliate Hillsboro, batting .412 with a slugging percentage of .913 in seven games.
