It’s Opening Day. So what better time to take a final gauge of fan confidence!
Despite an extended gap between February and March polls, for which I take full responsibility, it didn’t seem to move the needle very much in terms of the results. The injury to Kole Calhoun, and the issues affecting Nick Ahmed and TIm Locastro were perhaps already factored into the score, or may have been balanced out by the signings of Joakim Soria and Tyler Clippard.
- 27% – 1 (not confident in the slightest)
- 17% – 2
- 17% – 3
- 19% – 4
- 9% – 5
- 7% – 6
- 1% – 7
- 0% – 8
- 3% – 9 (very, very, VERY confident)
A slight hardening of attitudes at the bottom. The 27% who voted “1” is the highest for this category we’ve seen since last September, when we were in the middle of the twenty game streak of futility. However, this was counterbalanced by the upper tiers in general actually gaining slightly. The percentage who went for “5” or better increased from 18.8% to 20.0%. All told, there was only a fractional change in the average, a marginal uptick from 3.04 to 3.09. That does remain, quite easily, the lowest mark for March in poll history – there’s clearly no significant flowering of hope this spring!
Below, you can see the breakdown for the past 12 polls’ results, followed by the line graph showing the trends over this and previous seasons.
Yeah, due to the tardiness of the poll last month, it has not even been three weeks since the last time. However, there have been some significant bits of news on the D-backs front since then – and, unfortunately, not good. We’ve seen the injuries to potential closer Clippard and maybe staff ace Zack Gallen, which will keep both of them off the mound for a non-negligible portion of the 2021 campaign. Ahmed’s knee issues do seem to be lingering more than we’d like as well, and the spring performances of our pitching in general seemed to leave a bit to be desired, despite some strong individual showings.
But now, all the talk is over, and we stand on the brink of the 2021 regular season, with the roster set and the Diamondbacks ready to enter the fray. The poll is below, feel free to explain your choice in the comments, especially if it has changed from the February poll.
