The Diamondbacks went back to Wisconsin for their third selection
The Diamondbacks wrapped up a whirlwind of three picks in seven slots by taking a surprise pick in JD Dix, a prep shortstop out of Whitefish Bay in Wisconsin. The Diamondbacks have had some success drafting out of Wisconsin in recent years, and Dix is a switch-hitting shortstop who projects as average or above-average across the board. This is a high-upside pick who fits well with how the Diamondbacks have selected in recent years.
He’s 6’2” and 180, should be able to stick at shortstop, and reportedly has a great work ethic. Despite being a bit of a reach, he’s probably not going to take a discount, as he could go to Wake Forest, and the Diamondbacks have to sign him.
As far as shortstop prospects, he probably would rank no higher than fifth in the system, behind Lawlar, Tommy Troy, Jansel Luis, and Cristofer Torin, but he’s still got some high upside.
One more pick tonight.
