The Diamondbacks go the college bat route with their second selection
Malcolm Moore went to the Rangers in between the two Diamondbacks’ picks. That left a plethora of college bats available, as well as two potential top-of-the-rotation arms in Ryan Sloan and Brody Brecht, and a prep pitcher with major helium in Braylon Doughty. Given that they had chosen a high school player in Caldwell, the expectation was that they would go for a college player with the second pick.
They went with Ryan Waldschmidt, one of the starts on a Kentucky team that made a run to the College World Series in Omaha. He’s primarily a left fielder. He’s an above-average bat with above-average power and average speed, and a (stop me if you’ve heard this before) weak arm. Given what the Diamondbacks have in the system as far as outfield is concerned, it would seem likely that he winds up at first base.
