The Diamondbacks came into this final series of the first half against the Toronto Blue Jays, looking to get over .500 for the first time since April and most importantly keep the positive momentum heading into the break.
Friday Nights Game 1 was looking to be another lost opportunity to get above .500 but thankfully, the Answerbacks showed up once again and this time it was thanks to the Young King Alek Thomas and his 2 out, 2 run single followed by Domos walkoff sac-fly in the 9th.
Brandon wanted to find out from Gabe and Brett if they feel that Ryne Nelson has done enough to keep his starting rotation spot once Monty makes his return. He also brought up the idea of if it’s to early to start to worry about Alek and his offense struggles, or is this clutch hit a sign that he will slowly turn things around.
Saturdays Star Wars Night made sure not disappoint for all the fans in attendance as they snakes gave the Blue Jays an American beatdown of 12-1. Yilber Diaz’s second straight impressive outing had the fellas revisiting the Nelson question from game 1 and wondered if Diaz can put enough good games together to win that spot or if he still the odd man out. Corbin became the first DBacks leadoff hitter in franchise history with 6 RBI in one game which made the crew ask themselves which players performance was more impressive. Corbin Carroll and his 2 HR, 6 RBI or Eugenio Suarez and his 4th HR of his last 7 games
The Diamondbacks had their Ace Zac Gallen take the bump in hopes for a sweep, but couldn’t survive past the 4th inning while allowing 7 R and a lot of hard contact. This being his second straight stinker on the mound had the crew discussing what exactly Zac’s issues might be. Gabe had an interesting thought that maybe the way Gabi sets up for Gallens curve is a giveaway to hitters and they know it’s coming. The offense would thankfully get him off the hook for the loss as a Jake McCarthy swinging bunt single turned double on the error was the catalyst for a 7 run inning, which once again had the crew being optimistic that we’re seeing more signs that they might be back to the Answerbacks on more regular basis.
With the All Star Break now officially underway, that also meant that the MLB Draft would be taking place, and the Diamondbacks definitely have a type that they look out for and when it’s there they go for it. The crew touched on Slade Caldwell, Ryan Waldschmidt and JD Dix a little bit, but make sure to check out the MLB draft coverage on the Snake Pit by Steak85 for some more in depth analysis!
