D-Backs’ Corbin Carroll Makes MLB Rookie History

September 22, 2023 by Last Word On Baseball

For the past few games, the Arizona Diamondbacks have shown why they deserve to be in the 2023 MLB postseason. The team has won five straight games and is not eager to lose soon. During a 7-1 win over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night, D-Backs right fielder Corbin Carroll made MLB rookie history. Carroll became the first rookie in MLB history with 25 plus home runs and 50 or more stolen bases. Arizona has an 81-72 record, holding the second NL Wild Card spot. They have a game and a half-lead over the Cubs in the third Wild Card spot. Carroll has a huge opportunity to win the 2023 NL Rookie of the Year.

Corbin Carroll’s Incredible Rookie Season

Corbin has played in 147 games this season with 532 at-bats. Carroll has collected 152 hits, 25 home runs, 73 batted in, and 50 stolen bases with a .286 batting average. Drafted in 2019, and on August 29th, 2022, the Arizona Diamondbacks officially called Carroll to the majors. Corbin did not record 150 or more at-bats last season; because of this, that made 2023 his official rookie season. He played 32 games with 104 at-bats the year prior. Carroll recorded 27 hits, four home runs, 14 batted in, and two stolen bases with a .260 batting average. It’s safe to say that Corbin Carroll is far exceeding expectations, as well as his play from last year.

Carroll’s Stats Against Other Rookies

The promising young D-Backs star leads all rookies in the NL in hits and home runs. He ranks third amongst rookies in batting average and slugging percentage. Second in runs batted in, on-base percentage, and slugging plus on-base percentage. In addition, two more NL rookies could be named Rookie of the Year. Cincinnati Reds first baseman Spencer Steer is trying to edge out Carroll for the award before the season ends. Steer, in 149 games, has collected 148 hits, 22 home runs, 82 batted in, and fifteen stolen bases with a .269 batting average. Mets starting pitcher Kodai Senga wants his chance to edge out both of these terrific young positional players. Senga has a 12-7 record through 28 appearances. Kodai is putting up a 2.96 ERA through 161 innings pitched with 194 strikeouts.

Corbin The Favorite

Don’t get it twisted; Corbin is the overall favorite to win. Furthermore, he’s been an undeniable key piece who’s put immediate action in for the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. Having the rookie around for an entire season has changed this franchise to the fullest extent. He has a possibility of making the postseason in his first MLB season. In conclusion, now with Corbin Carroll, the chances that this D-Backs team can be a playoff team year in, and year out is endless.
