D-backs’ Daulton Varsho exits game vs. Twins in 6th with heel contusion

June 19, 2022 by ArizonaSports.com - 98.7 FM

Arizona Diamondbacks utility man Daulton Varsho left the game against the Minnesota Twins with a left heel contusion while trying to beat out a ground ball in the sixth inning on Saturday, manager Torey Lovullo confirmed Saturday.

He jumped and grabbed the back of his leg after the play before limping all the way back to the dugout when he stepped on the first-base bag awkwardly.

He was replaced by Jordan Luplow in right field.

The utility man has played multiple spots in the outfield while also splitting time at catcher with Jose Herrera while Carson Kelly was injured.

Varsho is hitting .243 with 28 RBIs, 18 walks and nine home runs.

He has been a staple of the D-backs’ lineup, appearing in 61 of the 67 games including Saturday night’s contest.

Arizona has a few options in the outfield that include Pavin Smith, Luplow and Jake McCarthy who is currently in Triple-A Reno but has appeared in 31 games in the big leagues so far in 2022.

Varsho has shown improvement in his third year in the majors, just two off his career mark for home runs in a season of 11. He is also just 10 RBIs shy of his career high mark of 38.

Ketel Marte is day-to-day with a mild left hamstring strain, Lovullo told reporters Saturday.

Arizona fell to Minnesota 11-1 on Saturday.
