Roster move

The Arizona Diamondbacks made the following roster moves:

  • Signed RHP Jake Faria (fuh-REE-uh) as a free agent.
  • Designated INF/OF Ildemaro Vargas for assignment.

At the risk of repeating yesterday’s preview, you are probably asking yourself right now, “Who the hell is Jake Faria?” A fair question, once again. Also like’s yesterday new guy, Noé Ramirez‚ Faria is an Angels’ reject, having been released by them on June 16. He was a 10th round draft pick in 2011 for the Rays, and debuted as part of their rotation in 2017. He was traded to the Brewers at the deadline in 2019 for Jesus Aguilar, and they released him last November, when the Angels picked him up. All told, he has a 4.54 ERA (93 ERA+) over 170.1 MLB innings, but hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2019. He has a 5.65 ERA over 36.2 IP, with a K:BB of 46:15 AAA Salt Lake this year.

So. 15 losses in a row for the D-backs, a new franchise record. It’s also pretty damn elevated regardless of franchise. It’s the longest streak within a single season by any National League team, since the 1982 Mets also went 15 in a row [the Cubs did lose 16 consecutive games, but split over the 1996-97 seasons] Lose tonight – that seems the most likely outcome – and next up will be the 1977 Braves and 1962 Mets, who each endured 17 consecutive defeats, then a couple of deadball era teams on 19. Then we have the 1969 Expos (20 in a row); beyond them, are only the 1961 Phillies, who hold the post-19th century record, with 23 straight L’s. Right now, it’s all too easy to see Arizona challenging them.

Torey Lovullo notes

  • While Faria had been working this year as a starter in the PCL West for Salt Lake, Torey said Faria will be working out of the bullpen. He was primarily a starter for the Rays in 2017-2018, he went to the Brewers in 2019 and did not make any starts. He throws a fastball, splitter, & slider and the splitter is probably his best pitch.
  • No starter has been named yet for Sunday
  • J.B. Bukauskas threw a 25-pitch bullpen.
