I hope you enjoyed your Diamondbacks-less days of silence!
Roster move
The Arizona Diamondbacks made the following roster move:
- Reinstated LHP Madison Bumgarner from the 10-day injured list (left shoulder inflammation).
See Jack’s series preview for more on that. Meanwhile, he returns to the D-backs to start off the second half, with the team owning a record of 26-66. There have been four other teams in the expansion era (since 1961) to have had 26 wins after 92 games. Let’s take a look at how they did the rest of the way. That might give us a clue as to what we might expect from Arizona over the remaining seventy contests. Here they are, with their win tally the rest of the way and the final position.
- 1964 Mets (27 wins, 53-109): Technically, this lot were 26-65-1, due to a 1-1 tie on June 7. But close enough.
- 2009 Nationals (33 wins, 59-103). So, based on this: Diamondbacks 2024 National League West champions confirmed?
- 2018 Royals (32 wins, 58-104) and Orioles (21 wins, 47-115). Two teams were engaged in a bitter fight over the #1 pick, but the Orioles pulled away in the second half. I hope catcher Adley Rutschman was worth it.
It is worth noting that all four teams did perform better the rest of the way. The current .283 win percentage of the D-backs would equate to 20 wins the rest of the way, but the four teams produced between 21 and 33 wins, with an average of 28. If the D-backs come in at the mean, that would give them 50 wins; very close to the 51-111 franchise record, belonging to the 2004 team, of course.
No #ToreyTalks today. I decided just not to cover it and didn’t tell anyone. Don’t let ‘hacks know. 🙂 Actually, we managed to screw up the start time, but going by the lack of Tweets, doesn’t appear there was anything too groundbreaking said. Hey, we’re still getting back into the swing of things here. Normal service will be resumed tomorrow!
