Logan Webb looked like a CY Young runner-up and Ryne Nelson was injured on a comebacker, making another long evening for a beleaguered bullpen.
If you take a quick look at Logan Webb’s game logs and overall stats for the early season, you’d see the 3.80 ERA and think he’s been struggling compared to what you expect from the CY Young runner-up. But when you dig deeper, you only have one stinker of a performance, 5 runs allowed in 3.2IP against the Dodgers. Since then, 14 innings with only 3 runs allowed.
For the Diamondbacks is Ryne Nelson, coming off his best start of the year against the Cardinals where he allowed a single run across 6 innings that solidified his spot in the rotation with Jordan Montgomery returning this week.
The Diamondbacks pounced early, in what looked to be another early lead for the team in the 1st inning as both Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll led off the ballgame with singles, but three straight futile outs from the supposed sluggers let Webb off the hook, and from then on was unhittable, as Dbacks hitters flailed at the sinker through the next 6 innings, only reaching on a Christian Walker walk in the 7th.
Tyler Rogers came on in relief, and it looked like the team would finally break through after Moreno lifted a liner to right field, but Yastrzemski made a diving catch and sucked whatever momentum the team had. Grichuk would single with 2-outs in the inning, but it was over. The offense didn’t show up and it culminated in a pitiful 9th inning with Marte, Carroll, and Pederson striking out against Ryan Walker to complete the three-hit shutout.
The aforementioned Ryne Nelson was cruising through his own first two innings, allowing two hits but erasing one on a double play and knocking down a comeback with his elbow to get the third out in the 2nd. He hustled into the dugout and down the steps into the training rooms, clutching his elbow and leaving Torey scrambling to get a replacement.
Shoutout Logan Allen, making his season debut way earlier than anyone could have expected as he allowed the team to mount a comeback that would never come. He allowed a leadoff double and single to put runners on the corners, but escaped by a sac fly and ground out to get out of the threat and from then on only allowed a single walk through his 4.2IP. 1-0 Giants.
Bryce Jarvis, coming off a day off after being overused, wasn’t able to hit spots and the Giants capitalized. Old friend Nick Ahmed tomahawked a double and an error and walk loaded the bases. It looked like he’d get out of the jam with a Soler groundout, but Torey went to Kyle Nelson and Bob Melvin countered with Wilmer Flores, who doubled to left, scoring two runs, 3-0 Giants.
A lazy flyball almost got them out of the threat, but Yastrzemski singled to right scoring two more runs and putting this game on ice, 5-0 Giants.
Well, at least there’s a game tomorrow. Jordan Montgomery makes his D-backs debut against the Giants Blake Snell on Apple TV at 7:15pm. What did you think of this game?
