When it’s spring training, of course!
Record: 4-6-1. Five-inning record: 5-5-1.
Considering there weren’t many known names pitching for the D-backs in tonight’s game at Camelback Ranch, I guess it’s quite impressive they held the World Series Champions* to only three runs. And one of those was an unearned run, after Domingo Leyba clanked a flyball off his glove to lead-off the bottom of the eighth and final inning for a two-base error. That runner immediately scored on a ground-rule double off Kevin Ginkel, and with the score at the time being 2-2, that should have been the game ender. But spring gonna spring, and Ginkel was allowed to work into a bases-loaded jam, before then escaping without further damage. So the Dodgers won AND made the final out. #SpringTraining
Ginkel was likely the best-known pitcher tonight for Arizona. With Madison Bumgarner having played in a B-game back at Salt River Fields this morning, Seth Frankoff started instead. Outside of a two-run homer to Corey Seager, he pitched well enough, going 3.1 innings and allowing those two runs on three hits and a walk, with four strikeouts. Joe Mantiply tidied up the fourth, and there were then scoreless frames from Jeremy Beasley, Taylor Guilbeau and Anthony Swarzak. The last was perhaps the most impressive. After the first two reached, putting men on the corners with no outs, Swarzak struck out the side. All told D-backs pitchers fanned a dozen.
David Peralta was responsible for driving in both of Arizona’s runs tonight. He led off the game with a home-run to right field, and then tied things up in the fifth, with a groundout that scored Daulton Varsho. However, the D-backs managed only five hits and a pair of walks, with Josh VanMeter getting one of each, and were 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. I’m sure there was other stuff, but as I approach five thousand SnakePit words for the day, I think I’m going to go and have a late dinner instead! Tomorrow’s an off-day for the D-backs, so I will have a bit of a chance to recover!
