Diamondbacks add P Anthony Swarzak as non-roster invitee

March 5, 2021 by ArizonaSports.com - 98.7 FM Leave a Comment

The Arizona Diamondbacks added right-handed pitcher Anthony Swarzak as a non-roster invitee to spring training on Thursday.

The reliever worked out for teams in January after he didn’t pitch in 2020.

In 2019, Swarzak posted a 4.31 ERA, allowing 19 earned runs on 38 hits over the course of 44 games (39.2 innings pitched). He struck out 35 batters and walked 19.

Swarzak made his MLB debut in 2009 as a member of the Minnesota Twins. He was outrighted by the club in 2014.

The reliever then took his talents to Cleveland for the 2015 season before joining the Korea Baseball Organization’s Doosan Bears following his release in May.

Returning back to the states in 2016, Swarzak signed a minor league deal with New York Yankees. He was promoted to the big leagues later that season.

Electing to test free agency in 2017, the pitcher signed a minor league deal with the Chicago White Sox. He was traded months later to the Milwaukee Brewers.

That 2017 stint between the two clubs was some of Swarzak’s best work in MLB, posting a 2.33 ERA to go along with 91 strikeouts and a 6-4 record in 70 games (77.1 IP).

Swarzak would also have stops with the New York Mets (2017), Seattle (2018), Atlanta (2019) and Philadelphia (2020 minor league deal).
