That wheezing sound you hear are the two bullpens…
Roster moves
- Recalled from Triple-A Reno: RHP Justin Martinez (No. 63)
- Selected contract: LHP Logan Allen (No. 22)
- Optioned to Triple-A Reno following last night’s game: RHP Luis Frías, LHP Tommy Henry
- Transferred to the 60-day injured list: LHP Eduardo Rodriguez
The D-backs’ 40-man roster remains at 40.
I guess the decision has been made with regard to the fifth starter’s spot, Henry being the recipient of an all-expenses paid vacation in Reno, to make room for Jordan Montgomery. But in the meantime, until that roster spot is needed – it’s still not clear quite when Montgomery will enter the rotation – the team wants to use it for an additional bullpen arm, in addition to dumping Frias. Enter Martinez, and we all know what to expect there. That said, in 6.2 innings for Reno, he has “only” walked three batters. That’s an improvement over last year, where between AAA and the majors, it was basically one per inning. We’ll see if that sustains, or is small sample size.
When/if he appears (before a roster move is needed to make room for Montgomery) Allen will be making his Diamondbacks debut, having been signed to a minor-league contract in January. He is not to be confused with the other Logan Allen, who pitches in Cleveland. Though confusing matters, when this one last pitched in the majors during the 2022 season, it was for Cleveland and Baltimore. Since then, he has been with the Rockies and Mariners in the minors. For Reno, the left-hander has a 3.00 ERA over 12 innings, with a K:BB ratio of 9:3. He started twice, most recently a 90-pitch outing on April 10th, so if the team needs length out of the pen in support of Brandon Pfaadt, I expect Allen will see action.
