He’s BAAAAAAAACK… 🙂

Roster moves
The Arizona Diamondbacks made the following roster moves. The D-backs’ 40-man roster is at 40.
- Reinstated from 10-day injured list: OF Corbin Carroll (fractured left wrist)
- Optioned to Triple-A Reno following last night’s game: INF/OF Tim Tawa
Must admit, surprised to see Carroll back so quickly, only 17 days after his last appearance. When I heard the words “fractured left wrist”, I was expecting him to miss at least a month, then probably need some cautious rehab before being cleared to play. But one game in the Arizona Complex League was apparently good enough to get the green light. Hope it’s not a case of being rushed back. But then, the season is pretty much staring into the abyss anyway. We’re two below .500 for the first time since June 9, and if they don’t win today, will be behind the 2024 record for the first time since the opening series. And remember, last year we had a historic July + August, and STILL didn’t make the post-season.
It marks the end – for now – of Tawa’s time on the roster. It was a lovely story, seeing an 11th-round pick make his way to the major league, and initially it seemed like it could be a real Cinderella story. Through his first thirty games after making his debut on April 5, he was holding his own, and had a line of .247/.327/.459 for a .785 OPS in a super-utility role – mostly at second, but also in the outfield. But the league figured out that he should be fed a steady diet of breaking pitches, and the glow went off very quickly. Across his last 29 games, the line collapsed to .143/.176/.229, a .404 OPS with a K:BB of 26:3 in 75 PAs. I hope he can figure it out in AAA, and get another chance down the road.
The team certainly need a spark. They went 7-8 in Carroll’s absence, which is not terrible, but is certainly not good enough as they seek to improve their position in the wild-card standings. A three-game losing streak isn’t helpful, but the fact the D-backs have been outscored 22-10 across the defeats is more concerning. They certainly have not looked competitive in the last two games, trailing for the entire contest after one out in the top of the first on Thursday, and NO outs in the top of the first yesterday. Thet’s the very definition of uphill baseball, and outside of a brief spark of life in the bottom of the first last night, they simply have not looked like a play-off caliber club. Here’s to better tonight.
